Mother's Day Alternatives

This coming weekend is very busy for Louisville. Not only is the Kentucky Derby Festival wrapping up, but Mother's Day is also Sunday, May 8. With all the guests in town, it will be difficult to find a restaurant to celebrate Mother's Day. Not only will restaurants be busy, but it is a Mother's Day cliché.

Two organizations are offering free admissions to mothers: The Louisville Zoo and Kentucky Kingdom. This is a wonderful opportunity to provide your mother with a different, surprising day out.

McDonald's Restaurants is sponsoring Mother's Day at the Zoo. You can enjoy the day to learn the similarities between human and animal mothers of differing species. Zookeepers will be offering talks about the mothers of animals, such as the zebra, Morena, who gave birth to Annette, last year. A scavenger hunt will be offered, as well.  The first 500 mothers will receive a gift bag courtesy of McDonalds. From 10:00 am - 2:00 pm, McDonaldland characters will be available for meeting and pictures.

Kentucky Kingdom, Louisville's recently reopened amusement park, is opening for its second weekend of its third season under new ownership. The usual range of rides, you expect from an amusement park, are offered; ranging from children's rides to the five roller coasters. The Aqua Theater offers a rescued sea lion show, with proceeds from merchandise sales going to the World Wildlife Fund. Fodor's Travel Guide has named Kentucky Kingdom among the top 10 amusement parks, for 2016.

Mother's get free admission, but admission prices, for the other members of the family, to the Zoo are $16.25 for adults and $11.75 for children, aged 3 to 11, and seniors, aged 60 and older; Kentucky Kingdom admission is $39.95 through May 22, 2016, so come out and enjoy the day outside, with your family and either learn about animal life or scratch your thrill-seeking itch.
